Everything You Need to Know

Under the Hood

How It Works

PLUS_DI is part of Wilder's Directional Movement System, calculated by dividing smoothed PLUS_DM by smoothed True Range (ATR), then multiplying by 100: +DI = 100 × (Smoothed PLUS_DM / ATR). This normalizes upward directional movement by volatility, creating a percentage-based measure ranging from 0-100. Default 14-period calculation. +DI quantifies the strength of upward directional movement - higher values indicate stronger uptrends. Used with -DI and ADX for complete directional analysis.

In Practice

How Traders Use It

Cryptocurrency traders use PLUS_DI to measure uptrend strength and generate directional signals. When +DI > -DI, upward movement dominates (bullish regime). +DI crossing above -DI signals potential uptrend start; crossing below signals potential downtrend. The magnitude of +DI indicates uptrend intensity - values above 25 with +DI > -DI confirm strong uptrends. Combine +DI with -DI for crossover signals, with ADX for trend strength confirmation (ADX > 25 confirms strong trend), or with momentum indicators for optimal entry timing. Essential component of complete ADX/DI systems used by trend followers and directional traders.
